Stanbic Bank Ghana, RD Technologies Eye Asia Trade Settlement Pilot
The two firms are exploring a bank-led pilot to streamline cross-border payments between Ghanaian businesses and Asian suppliers using digital-asset infrastructure.
Stanbic Bank Ghana and RD Technologies have announced a collaborative effort to develop a more efficient settlement pathway for trade flows between Ghana and Asia, according to a joint statement released in Accra on Monday. The proposed initiative would combine traditional local banking services with digital-asset settlement infrastructure to reduce friction for Ghanaian businesses paying suppliers across the continent.
The pilot, if launched, would represent one of the more concrete attempts by an established African commercial bank to integrate blockchain-adjacent settlement technology into routine corporate trade finance. Cross-border payments between sub-Saharan Africa and Asian markets have historically been burdened by correspondent banking fees, currency conversion delays, and limited direct clearing relationships.

Stanbic Bank Ghana operates as part of the broader Standard Bank Group network, giving it access to institutional banking infrastructure across Africa. RD Technologies brings digital-asset and settlement technology capabilities to the partnership. The two organizations said the arrangement is designed specifically to address pain points faced by Ghanaian importers who regularly transact with suppliers in Asian markets.
No specific timeline or transaction volume targets were disclosed in the announcement. The initiative remains in an exploratory phase, with details of the technical architecture and regulatory approach still being worked through. Analysts tracking African fintech development have noted that bank-led digital settlement pilots carry more immediate commercial credibility than purely crypto-native alternatives, given established compliance frameworks and existing customer relationships.
