Bloomberg Automates Japanese Government Bond Market-on-Close Trading
Bloomberg completed its first fully automated JGB Market-on-Close trade, streamlining workflow aligned to the BB3P Hikene Trading reference rate.
Bloomberg Electronic Markets executed the first fully automated Japanese Government Bond (JGB) Market-on-Close trade in Tokyo on Oct. 4, 2026, marking a significant operational milestone for one of the world's largest sovereign debt markets. The new automated workflow is designed to reduce manual intervention in a process that has historically required considerable human coordination.
The automation is aligned to BB3P, also known as Hikene Trading, which serves as the Market-on-Close reference rate for JGBs. That benchmark rate plays a central role in end-of-day pricing for Japanese government debt, making the reliability and efficiency of order execution around that fixing a priority for institutional participants.

By introducing automation to the Market-on-Close workflow, Bloomberg aims to give fixed-income traders greater operational certainty and reduced execution risk during the critical closing window. Automated systems can process and match orders with greater speed and consistency than manual processes, a factor that becomes especially significant in high-volume or volatile market conditions.
The JGB market is among the most actively traded sovereign bond markets globally, and incremental improvements to market infrastructure can carry broad implications for banks, asset managers, and central bank counterparties operating in the space. Bloomberg's move reflects a wider industry trend toward electronic and algorithmic solutions in fixed-income markets, a segment that has historically lagged equities in automation adoption.
