ORIC Pharma Partners With Cancer Research UK on Novel CIP2A Drug
ORIC Pharmaceuticals and Cancer Research UK have agreed to advance ORIC-259, a potential first-in-class cancer therapy, toward clinical trials.
ORIC Pharmaceuticals has entered into an agreement with Cancer Research UK to bring a novel cancer treatment candidate closer to human clinical trials, the company announced. The experimental drug, ORIC-259, is designed to target CIP2A, a protein previously considered undruggable by conventional therapeutic approaches.
ORIC-259 is classified as a small molecule mRNA degrader, a mechanism that works by breaking down the genetic messenger responsible for producing the CIP2A protein rather than blocking the protein directly. The approach represents an emerging strategy in oncology drug development aimed at reaching targets that have historically resisted standard inhibitor-based treatments.

CIP2A has drawn scientific interest as a cancer-relevant target because it plays a role in tumor cell survival and proliferation. The collaboration with Cancer Research UK, one of the world's largest independent cancer research organizations, is intended to support the preclinical and translational work needed to move ORIC-259 into a formal clinical development program.
If successful in clinical testing, ORIC-259 could become the first approved therapy to directly target CIP2A, potentially opening a new class of treatments for cancer patients whose tumors depend on this pathway. The broader significance lies in demonstrating that mRNA degradation can unlock previously inaccessible biological targets across oncology and potentially other disease areas.
