Brookdale Expands Real Estate Ownership With 47 Welltower Communities
Brookdale Senior Living acquires 17 communities and agrees to buy 30 more from Welltower, cutting long-term lease obligations.
Brookdale Senior Living Inc. (NYSE: BKD) announced two separate transactions with Welltower designed to accelerate the company's push to own more of the senior living communities it operates while trimming its long-term lease liabilities, the Brentwood, Tennessee-based company said Oct. 13, 2026.
In the first deal, Brookdale completed the acquisition of 17 communities, a transaction that represents an immediate shift in the company's balance sheet from tenant to owner. The second agreement calls for Brookdale to acquire 30 additional communities that it currently leases from Welltower, extending the company's ownership footprint considerably once the deal closes.

Welltower, a major healthcare real estate investment trust, benefits from the arrangement by monetizing assets and redeploying capital, a mutually structured outcome that both companies characterized as beneficial. The combined scope of 47 communities represents a significant repositioning for Brookdale's portfolio.
